Architecture of Longing
Throughout the making of this book, I found myself meditating on what it means to love without expectation. To love someone’s soul and embrace the ways our flesh fails. I kept coming back to this idea of effervescent love, or the word shimmer - the idea that you can glimpse someone’s soul like a shimmer
I come from the school of Octavia Butler who talks about God as Change in The Parables, and I think if God is change, love is release. It’s about noticing those moments of shimmer and then letting them go, that
Love is an open palm rather than a closed fist
Love is a bird in flight rather than in a cage
Love is a crane at rest, in the quiet, in the snow
Releasing a need for control, dominance, power, and embracing a
practice of surrender. Loving someone - romantic, familial, animal, platonic - without a need for a result. Loving because loving in any capacity is a gift.
And because love can transform us in ways nothing else can.
